Dumbo es un pequeño elefante nacido en el circo de Max Medici (Danny DeVito). Sus enormes orejas le convierten rápidamente en el hazmerreír de todos, excepto de dos jóvenes niños, Joe (Finley Hobbins) y Milly (Nico Parker), los hijos de Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell), una ex estrella de circo que acaba de regresar de la guerra y que debe hacer frente a los cambios de su vida mientras se ocupa de este pequeño animal. Pero la vida de este tierno paquidermo cambiará cuando descubra que precisamente gracias a sus grandes orejas puede volar. En ese momento, el emprendedor V.A Vandevere (Michael Keaton) y la acróbata aérea Colette Marchant (Eva Green) intentarán convertirlo en toda una estrella.
